Menís Soccer Finish Season Undefeated in League
Sunday, October 27, 2013
After hearing news that USD destroyed St. Katherineís College 8-0 on Friday night, UCSDís spirit were at an all time low. That 8-0 win meant that USD leap frogged UCSD and took first place with a plus five goal differential. This meant that in order for UCSD to make regionals they needed to beat Fullerton by at least 6 goals to qualify. However, this would seem no easy task as a week before USD narrowly beat Fullerton 1-0. And so the boys made the long trek to Fullerton for what will be there biggest test of the season.
The game got on the way and UCSD put all the pressure on the Fullerton back line. It didnít take long for UCSD to open the scoring as Jeremy Stone slid a shot passed the Fullerton keeper. However, just as soon as the play resumed it seemed the ball just did not want to cross the goal line in UCSDís favor. Shot after shot found itself either blocked or shot wide or high. It wasnít until late in the first half that Jamie was able to score the second goal and Stone struck again for the third. This meant that at half time only half of the job was completed. UCSD needed to due the same in the second half to make regionalís.
Coach, Matt Berson, had an exceptional half time talk that motivated the team to come out firing. Within minutes freshman Joel Witt bent in a beautiful shot that easily passed the goalie. This goal opened the flood gates as UCSD ended up scoring five more to cap the game off with a 9-0 win, qualifying them for regionalís. The other five goals were scored by a beautiful diving header by freshman Francisco Salinas, a well taken shot by Daniel Woo, a great curling effort by Joshua Tatsuno, and then Connor and Jamie both struck again each for there second of the game.
It was a successful day for UCSD as they finished their season undefeated in first place and with the highest goal differential, qualifying them for regionals in San Luis Obispo.
