UCSB defeats Cal Poly to claim Invitational title, UCSD takes third
Saturday, April 11, 2015
The 7th Annual UC San Diego Club Soccer Invitational began bright and early Saturday morning at Warren Field. The menís tournament featured seven teams one fewer than the womenís tournament with eight.
UC San Diego Menís Club kicked off their group stage with a rematch against UC Riverside, the two teams having drawn 2-2 the previous weekend. UCR started the game with only nine players with only an additional two arriving late. UC San Diego capitalized on this advantage with gusto, netting three goals before halftime. Captain Kazu Otani bagged a pair with additional goals coming from new players Ross Libman, Kenan Mesic, and Christian Gunther. In their second group game, the Tritons faced one of the best teams in the state: Cal Poly SLO A. The game started out well, with Francisco Salinas having a close 1v1 opportunity in the opening minutes. UC San Diego fought valiantly through the first half, managing to keep the Mustangs at bay and maintaining ball possession for long stretches. Come the second half Cal Poly started gaining momentum and scored two goals in quick succession. Despite their best efforts, UC San Diego was not able to recover from this deficit.
The loss against Cal Poly put the Tritons in the 3rd place game against USC. The Trojans had knocked the Tritons out of contention for the regional tournament in the Fall so UC San Diego went in with revenge on their minds. USC on the other hand, came in with their B-line and proceeded to get dominated by UC San Diego for the majority of the game. However, the Tritons had trouble converting their chances, a problem they have had all year. The Tritons finally broke through when Kazu Otani made a run past the goalkeeper and earned a penalty kick. Otani converted the PK for the only goal of the game to secure a third place finish for UC San Diego.
Overall, the tournament ended as expected for UC San Diego. After losing half of their starting lineup from last season, this year was considered a rebuilding period. After a disappointing fall season, UC San Diegoís performances have shown steady improvement throughout the year, especially from the underclassmen. Fans can hope for some silverware next Fall season. Meanwhile, UC Santa Barbara went on to shock reigning champs Cal Poly in the final match with a 2-1 victory for the Gauchos.
