UCSD Wins WWLL Championships
Sunday, April 20, 2014
The Tritons faced off against University of Nevada, Reno in the WWLL Championship game on Sunday, April 20th. While both teams fought tremendously hard, there could only be one champion. The game started off scoreless for the first ten minutes with many promising yet unsuccessful scoring opportunities from both sides. UCSD was able to get on the board first with a goal from junior Tace Higuchi. A few minutes later, the Tritons added to their score with a goal from senior Kirsten Koa. Unfortunately, UCSD was not able to hold the lead for too long as Reno netted two goals to tie the game 2-2. The rest of the half continued in the same fashion with the score back and forth. At one point, the Tritons had a three goal advantage over Reno but were unable to maintain the lead. At half time UCSD was on top 7-6. After an inspiring half time talk from the coaches, UCSD played with intensity and pride. The second half carried on like the first with neither team able to take and maintain a large lead for long. Emotions ran wild on both sides as the half dwindled with minutes left. UCSD had a one goal lead over Reno with less than two minutes in regulation. The Tritons currently with possession attempted to hold the ball to forbid Reno from scoring to push the game into overtime. With less than a minute left, UCSD lost possession and Reno pushed the ball through the midfield and into their attacking half. The whole crowd held their breath as UCSD denied Reno’s last scoring opportunity to tie the game. The Tritons defeated Reno 15-14 in the most competitive game of the season. With the victory UCSD received an automatic bid to the WCLA National Championships in Virginia Beach, VA from May 7th-May10th. The Tritons will face off against Utah and Duke in their first two games! GO TRITONS!
