Final Match, Tritons versus Cougars: Round 2
Saturday, April 4, 2015
The UC San Diego Tritons face off against the CSU San Marcos Cougars again, after losing to them in a scrimmage in early-February. The Tritons looked forward to this rematch, after being catch off-guard at the scrimmage by the Cougarís immense improvement since the previous seasons. In the first half, the Tritons looked defeated as the Cougars continued to score quickly, weaving through the Tritonís defense. The gap kept getting wider and wider, until the halftime whistle blew, leaving the Tritons trailing by a whopping 14-4 with running clock.
Coach Andrea and Senior Captains gave the team a much needed pep-talk and strategic advice. By the end of this talk, the team was 100% ready to jump back into the fighting arena filled with Cougars, to finish their last battle without regret. It was evident that the halftime talk had worked, because the Tritons scored one-after-one, nearly catching up. However, time was not on the Tritonís side, as there was not enough time to continue the scoring streak. The ending result was a close 17-14, with the Tritons losing only by 3 when at halftime, Tritons were down by 10. Had the team come out as they did in the second half, there is no doubt that the Tritons would have taken home the win. However, there were no regrets since the Tritons finished off strong and as a team.
The game highlight was all the seniors stepping it up during their last collegiate game of the season, and making it one to remember. Senior mid-fields #1 Amy Nham, #9 Mandy Venegas, and #23 Tace Higuchi ran incredibly throughout the whole game back-and-forth from defensive to offensive ends. Venegas scored 2 goals, Higuchi scored 4 goals, and Nham assisted 2 goals. Down low and getting wide-open, was Senior attackers #17 Karla Garibay and #11 Angela Dinhson with 3 goals. The team scored a couple goals with fast breaks and successfully executed plays. On defense was Senior #13 Sophia Ziogas, who helped the defensive side limit the Cougarsí goals to 3 in the second half.
Go Tritons! We look forward to the next season.
