2015 NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship
Tuesday, April 7, 2015
The UC San Diego Dance Team traveled to Daytona Beach, Florida on April 7th to compete in the NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship. After a couple plane rides from San Diego, the team arrived in Daytona on Tuesday. There was no time to rest however, as the team needed to rehearse new formations for the routine. A few days prior to departure, one of the team members suffered an injury that would prevent her from competing with the rest of the team. The team practiced late into the night and after a good night of rest went back to practicing first thing the next day. After 6 long hours of practice on Wednesday, the team and their coach spent the rest of the day resting up for competition the following day. Thursday was the first day of competition and only half of the teams from each category would move on to compete in finals the next day. After only having two days to re-block their competition routine, the team was nervous to perform this version for the first time in front of the judges and the audience. They went out on stage and did their best to give a great performance. Besides a few minor mistakes, the team was confident that they had done well enough to place in the top half of the teams in their category. They were right! The UC San Diego Dance Team received 7th place, out of 15 teams and were 1 of 9 teams that moved onto finals the following day. [The ninth team was selected after the remaining teams (9th-15th place) competed for the remaining spot in what is called “The Challenge Cup” later in the day on Thursday. Once the teams moving on in the competition were announced, the team received their score sheets and reviewed the judges comments on their routine.] After going over their scores and comments, the team watched the video and made note of anything they needed to improve on for the next day. With all of these comments and notes in mind, the team got a good night sleep to prepare for finals. On Friday the team woke up feeling ready to improve their performance from the previous day and show the judges that they had been actively paying attention to their comments. The team went out on stage and gave the best performance they could, knowing that this would be the last time they would compete this routine. After all of the teams in their category went, the UC San Diego Dance Team watched other performances while waiting for awards to begin. Finally, the time came for their category to receive their awards. They announced the awards starting from 9th and ending with 1st place. The UC San Diego Dance Team received 7th place after the final awards were distributed. Although the team wished they had moved up a place or two after finals, their coach was proud of them either way. The team worked hard, focused, and with only 2 days to practice their new formations, made it into finals. It takes a great team to be able to come together and accomplish what they did. That is something that they can all be proud of.
