TRITON DANCE TEAM EXPERIENCE OPTIMISTIC RESULTS IN ANAHEIM
Sunday, March 23, 2014
The United Spirit Association Collegiate Championships were held on Sunday, March 23rd and Monday, March 24th at the Anaheim Convention Center. The UC San Diego Dance Team traveled to Anaheim on Sunday to participate in this competition. It was the first time this year’s team was traveling together and everyone was excited for the competition and bonding experience.
After a short time relaxing, the team made their way over toward the Convention Center to get ready for competition. Sunday was the preliminary round for competition, which would count for 30% of the overall final score to determine what place each team would receive. The team did their hair and makeup, and then everyone helped each other lace up the backs of their costumes. Once everyone was laced up, the team went to go warm-up together and then checked in for their practice time. After running the dance one final time and some extra stretching, the team waited anxiously backstage to perform. Once the stage was cleared from awards for the All Star competition, it was time to begin the Collegiate Championships. The UC San Diego Dance Team was the first performance of the competition. The team performed and after watching all of the other teams in their division, they went to get the preliminary scores. The team had received 5th place, but felt that they could have done better and were ready to come back the next day with more confidence. On Monday, the team woke up early, went to the Convention Center, got ready, and then went to warm-up. After warming up and completing their practice round, the team was ready to take the stage once again. Once they were done performing, the team members and their Coach waited in the audience until it was time for awards. The team felt that they had improved from the day before, but weren’t sure if it would be enough to make it into the top 4.
After all of the divisions had performed, it was time for awards. Each division was brought out one at a time and told the placement each team received. It was finally time for the dance teams division and all of the teams onstage looked nervous. Once places 4th to 1st were called, the team realized that they had not made it into the top 4 and were still in 5th place. The team was disappointed, but happy that they had done better than the previous day after looking at the score sheets. They had been less than 1 point away from 4th place, prelims 30% and finals 70% combined. The team had a meeting after the awards to discuss how this weekend went and how they can improve before NDA Nationals in Florida in two weeks. They realize what they all need to work on and know that it can only improve from here. The team will be spending the next weeks preparing for their last competition and know that they will be even more amazing when they compete in Florida.
