Wood Bat Tournament
Saturday, November 8, 2014
Your UC San Diego Tritons traveled on the three-day Veteranís Day weekend to play in the third annual CSUF Veteranís Day Wood Bat tournament. The Tritons took the first game of the weekend Saturday morning 8-2 over UCLA. Powered by a complete game from Scott Reese and two run home runs from Jack Lombardi, the Tritons got off on the right foot early in the tournament.
The second game on Saturday did not go in the Tritonís favor, as they came out flat and could not overcome a 7 run second inning deficit to University of Nevada, Reno. UNR would prevail 9-0 leading to the Tritons having to play in a third game Saturday night to keep their tournament hopes alive.
In the third game on Saturday the Tritons would face the host team, Cal State Fullerton. Trailing 3-1 after four innings, senior Kevin Goullete came up and hit a clutch 3-run home run to give UCSD a 4-3 lead. The one run lead would not be enough as Fullerton rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extras. Shane Aldas hit a leadoff double in the top of the eighth and later scored on a sac fly by Tommy Valles to give the Tritons a one run lead. In his third inning of work, Andrew Hinkle would retire the Titans in order in the bottom of the inning to secure a 5-4 victory for the Tritons.
In an early Sunday morning elimination game, the Tritons once again came out flat and frustratingly could not score any runs against a solid Cal Poly SLO team. The final score came out to be 10-0 after five innings and eliminated the Tritons and gave them a 4th place finish in the tournament.
